The clock tower was built to connect, via drawbridge, Getsemani with old Cartagena. Now, it connects “La plaza de los Coches” (The Cars Square) with “La plaza de la independencia” (The Independence Square).

His build started in 1601, and in 1631 becomes to be the city's main entrance. We called it “The Mouth of the Bridge” because it had an elevated bridge that connected with the Getsemani Island and "town" over the San Anastasio canal.

In 1697, the bridge was destroyed by Bernard Desjean, baron of Pointis (France) and restored in 1704 by the engineer Juan Herrera y Sotomayor.

In 1874, a simple square clock tower, taken to the United States, was put on the top. But 14 years after, in 1888, Luis Felipe Jaspe made a new tower design.

But remember: You can’t go into the Torre del Reloj itself, or climb it: the closest you’ll get is walking through the archways underneath.
The Torre del Reloj is in the Plaza del Reloj, just off Avenida Venezuela. It’s easily accessible on foot from the centro historico, or a short walk from the Getsemani district.
