The first name was "Plaza del Juez", because here was the residence of the lawyer Francisco de Santa Cruz, who arrived in the city with the task of taking the oath of the new Governor Don Juan de Badillo who would replace Don Pedro de Heredia, founder of Cartagena de Indias.

This square was designated by the authorities for the sale of black Africans who came to the city as slaves, and for this reason it took the name of "Plaza del Esclavo".
